Support Group for Teens with Type 1 Diabetes

Need to talk? Here’s your chance!

If you’re a teen and need a place to get your feelings out in the open, we have just the group for you. You’ll have time to talk and find the support you need from other teens who’ve been there and understand. Interested? Here’s what you need to know.

Date: The first Thursday of each month
Time: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Place: Helwig Health and Diabetes Center
1251 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Suite 212A
Allentown, PA 18103
Group facilitator: Jerry Rodriguez, a licensed clinical social worker with more than 20 years of experience working with teens and families in group and individual sessions. Jerry has special skills working with people experiencing mood and anger disturbances resulting from various medical conditions.

Potential group problem-solving topics include:

  • Diabetes acceptance
  • Coping with the stress of daily diabetes self-management
  • The needle and the pump
  • Self-management and school issues
  • Anger management
  • Diabetes self-management and peer pressure
  • Parent/teen conflicts and self-management compliance
  • Independence vs. dependence
  • Nutrition and activity planning
